Award winning singer-songwriter Amirah is on a mission to unite people through her music.
She is an innovative artist whose musical style has been described as global cinematic pop, a fusion of traditional eastern instruments and pop music. Amirah has coined this unique hybrid mix of sounds "Global Hybrid Music".
A bi-racial artist with a unique perspective, Amirah’s gift is her ability to breathe new life into traditional music with her modern cinematic pop sound.
Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Amirah grew up surrounded by a melting pot of people and hybrid cultures, where old-world traditions coexist side by side with modern values. This exposure to diversity has framed who Amirah is today, both as an artist and as a human being.
Amirah was only five years old when she started playing her grandfather's rusty old piano. By eleven, she was writing her first compositions.
Amirah first rose to prominence with the hit single "Katakanlah," a song she wrote depicting her devastation over the desecration of churches and mosques in Malaysia after clashes between Christians and Muslims. Much to Amirah's surprise, the plea for unity attracted the attention of the national media, even gaining the support of the former Prime Minister’s daughter, Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir.
Inspired by all types of music from Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto to Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninov, she is dedicated to continually exploring new ways of expressing herself through music.
Her second single, “Tell Me,” is a dramatic song in which Amirah calls for unity, peace and tolerance. Both “Tell Me” and “You Are My Land” will be on her upcoming debut album, entirely recorded with Grammy award-winning producer Jeff Bova.
On her latest single, she has delivered a dramatic ode to the powers that unite us all, despite our polarized world. “Tell Me” asks the questions that are on many of our minds as we struggle to make sense of the chaos of our identity in the modern era.
With a vulnerable and unique voice that is subtle yet enticing, her music draws you into the quiet bravery seen in her lyrics. Her songs call out for diversity, equality, acceptance and unity not only through her lyrical content, but also through her music arrangements.
As a torchbearer of a new style of hybrid pop music, Amirah fuses traditional instruments and music with cinematic pop to create an East meets West sound. One of Amirah's greatest gifts is her ability to breathe new life into traditional music, making it sound vital and fresh to the ears of younger generations.
